Within the framework of this residency, the artist participate in the ifk Fellow Program and is provided with an office at the institute. Generous accommodation will be provided at the abbey. The work created during the fellowship may find a place within the museum and exhibition program of Klosterneuburg Abbey.

The call for applications is primarily aimed at artists whose centre of life and work is not in Austria. Residence in the abbey is obligatory.

Klosterneuburg Abbey

The Augustinian Canons' Abbey of Klosterneuburg was founded in 1114 and has existed almost without interruption since then. Due to its long history as a spiritual and/or political centre, Klosterneuburg Abbey is a very special place. One can find architectural, artistic and spiritual testimonies from 9 centuries. The monastery is still in operation today: as a religious and economically active place.

During the residency you are invited to work with the collections: Treasury, Imperial Apartment, Medieval Cloister, St. Leopold's Chapel, but also a library with almost 300,000 volumes. The library sees itself as an active research institution. There is a lively exhibition and event activity in the abbey in the field of contemporary art, not least driven by the St. Leopold Peace Prize for Contemporary Art, which has been awarded every two years since 2008.

What you get

The artists receive an allowance of max. € 2,325 per month (€ 75/day) as well as a workplace at the ifk with IT and internet access. In addition, a spacious flat in the Klosterneuburg Abbey is provided free of charge. Travel costs for arrival and departure will be covered. Costs for health and social insurance are covered by the fellows themselves.

The abbey also offers:

  • Free access and use of the museum, library and archive infrastructure (by arrangement).
  • Possibility of contact with Augustinian Canons and employees of the various departments of the abbey.
  • Temporary exhibition of the works created during the residency, according to the space available.
What we expect
  • An artistic examination of the historical site of the abbey and its diverse impulses in the field of tension between a living Catholic abbey, business enterprise and tourist attraction.
  • Participation in the Fellow lectures and meetings at the ifk.
