Scholarships for artists, arts-based researchers, and curators

The VALIE EXPORT Center Linz makes accessible, researches, and communicates the legacy of VALIE EXPORT. As an internationally oriented research center, it promotes the artistic and scholarly study of media and performance art.

The VALIE EXPORT Center's call to apply for work grants addresses experienced artists, arts-based researchers, and curators. People interested in critical discourse about archives and artistic traditions of knowledge are invited to apply. Prerequisites for an application are a completed degree (MA, diploma, or comparable final degree) and proof of several years of outstanding artistic or curatorial practice in international work contexts. Applications are particularly welcome from people who have no previous connection with the University of Art and Design Linz.

Funding is available to support work on projects that are limited in time and thematic scope and which serve the individual’s artistic development or to develop the profile of an independent arts-based research or curatorial position.

In the funding of curatorial projects, the focus is on developing a public program that will be implemented in close collaboration with colleagues at the Research Center and the University of Art and Design Linz. Educational work will also play a central role. Applicants must have experience in curatorial practice and have built up a good network or have a keen interest in local networking.

The VALIE EXPORT Center and the University of Art and Design Linz offer scholarship holders a wide range of opportunities for engaging in exchanges, collaboration, and networking with colleagues from the fields of science, design, and art. The projects of all scholarship holders will be presented in Linz after the funding period ends either as part of an exhibition, a work presentation, a performance, a workshop, or a similar format of visualization and communication.

The working languages at the VALIE EXPORT Center are German and English. The projects themselves and their documentation can be developed in any language or without language. The scholarship includes a grant of 1500 euros per month and a workspace at the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz. Funding begins in May 2025 at the earliest and will be granted for a maximum of 7 months.

Applications in German or English (CV with certificates, portfolio, or documentation of previous artistic, arts-based research or curatorial work, short description — 4 pages maximum—of the planned work project, and preferred dates for the beginning and end of the scholarship) should be submitted by April 25, 2025 latest via the submission system of the University of Art and Design Linz: https://calls.kunstuni-linz.at/calls/VEC-A25/
